PR’s Societal Mandate: Ethics, Law, and Moral Reasoning Across Regions
On 11 February, the Global Alliance will host a webinar examining how communicators navigate the complex layers of legality, ethics, and moral reasoning across diverse political and cultural landscapes. The session will use the “ethical onion” framework to unpack the growing weight of communication decisions and the responsibilities attached to them.
This conversation is particularly timely for practitioners who find themselves operating in volatile, emotionally charged environments. Whether dealing with misinformation, identity‑based conflict, or escalating stakeholder expectations, PR professionals must increasingly balance what is legally required, what is ethically sound, and what is morally responsible.
The session will be moderated by Kia Haring, Director of Ethics and Standards at the Global Alliance and a leading voice on global PR ethics.
She will be joined by an international panel of scholars and experts:
Chiara Valentini, PhD – University of Jyväskylä, Finland & IULM University
Marlene Neill, PhD, APR, Fellow PRSA – Baylor University, USA
Flora Hung-Baesecke, PhD – University of Technology Sydney, Australia
Together, they will explore how practitioners can navigate growing ethical tensions while reinforcing the legitimacy and societal value of the profession.
