Coimisiún na Meán Highlights New ACM Investigation into Roblox

Dutch regulator launches probe into Roblox under the EU’s Digital Services Act, and Coimisiún na Meán is central to the complaint process. What does this mean for online safety and Irish users?

Coimisiún na Meán has welcomed a significant development in EU digital regulation, following the decision by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) on 30 January to launch a formal investigation into Roblox’s compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA).

The ACM, acting as the Digital Services Coordinator of Establishment for Roblox, is examining whether the hugely popular online gaming platform has taken adequate and proportionate steps to protect minors across the EU. With Roblox attracting tens of millions of young users daily, concerns have been mounting around issues such as exposure to harmful content, contact risks from bad actors, and the use of potentially manipulative design features.

As part of this new investigation, ACM will assess the robustness of Roblox’s safety measures and whether they align with the obligations set out under the DSA, a regulatory framework designed to create a safer and more transparent online environment for EU citizens, especially minors.

For users based in Ireland, Coimisiún na Meán plays a direct role. Individuals who wish to raise concerns or make a complaint can do so through Coimisiún na Meán. After an initial assessment, the regulator may then transmit the complaint to ACM for examination as part of its broader investigation.
