The Digital Communications Officer will lead on the creation and delivery of high-quality engaging content across Trinity’s social media and digital channels, with a particular focus on both the College Life and Thought Leadership pillars. The role will employ digital storytelling to foster engagement, build community, and enhance Trinity’s reputation as a vibrant place to study, work, and visit. 

The Purpose of the Role

Trinity College Dublin actively uses its social media and digital platforms to communicate and engage with its full range of stakeholders including students, staff, potential students, researchers, parents, teachers, alumni, political leaders, donors, funding agencies and employers, nationally and internationally.

Under Trinity College Dublin’s new strategic plan, Thrive, the social media output of Trinity Communications will have an enhanced and explicit focus on three key pillars: College Life, Thought Leadership, and Research Communications. College Life is a well-established strand that celebrates the student experience and campus culture. Thought Leadership is a newly introduced pillar, designed to elevate Trinity’s voice in public discourse through horizon-scanning and collaboration with the University Spokesperson and Research Communications Managers. Research Communications will be led by the newly appointed Research Digital Storyteller, with a focus on showcasing Trinity’s research excellence in accessible and compelling ways.

The Digital Communications Officer will lead on the creation and delivery of high-quality engaging content across Trinity’s social media and digital channels, with a particular focus on both the College Life and Thought Leadership pillars. They will support the continued development of College Life content, capturing the lived experience of students and staff reflecting the richness of life at Trinity. This position will also have a central role in shaping the new Thought Leadership strand—identifying emerging topics, amplifying academic expertise, and enhancing Trinity’s position as a thought leader and trusted voice in national and global conversations.

The Digital Communications Officer will employ digital storytelling to foster engagement, build community, and enhance Trinity’s reputation as a vibrant place to study, work, and visit.

Context

The Digital Communications Officer role will be part of Trinity’s high performing central communications team. This involves working with the social media team and wider communications team on diverse and strategic projects, creating original digital content in various forms, supporting the Trinity Communications team’s mission which commits “to share Trinity's stories, strengthen connections and show impact, with the vision to be trusted leaders creating compelling communications and meaningful relationships”.

Reporting to the Head of Digital Communications and collaborating with the University Spokesperson and Research Communications Managers, as well as other team members, as appropriate, the post-holder will work on creative, innovative, challenging and rewarding digital communications projects, as part of an exciting and faced-paced team. As a fundamental part of the central social media team, this role also works with and guides university staff managing local social and digital accounts across the University.

Main Responsibilities

This is a list of the tasks, duties and responsibilities for the role:

  • Working with the Head of Digital Communications, and in collaboration with the University Spokesperson and Research Communications Managers, develop the new “Thought Leadership” pillar
  • Coordinate digital communications projects, liaising with stakeholders, students, and staff, to develop and create digital and social media content on Trinity’s strategic goals relating to college and student life, public affairs, thought leadership and societal impact
  • Capture, create and produce high-quality digital content (e.g. video, photography, graphics, multimedia etc.) for use across the University’s central social media channels, campus campaigns, websites, and other platforms
  • Coordinate the social media content calendar for the central University social media channels 
  • Deputise for the Head of Digital Communications at the weekly University Social Media Group meeting and other meetings or event when required 
  • Collaborate with University staff on digital content and projects, and guide staff on digital communications and social media best practices
  • Work with our team of Student Social Media Ambassadors, including coordinating content call outs and managing user-generated content
  • Assist the Head of Digital Communications to develop and implement content strategy and digital communication plans to deliver on the University’s strategic objectives
  • Perform regular data analysis, including measurement and reporting of central digital and social media communications activities, and implementing change based on result analysis
  • Identify and development opportunities for social media and digital projects that align with the Communications Team’s mission and vision
  • Ensure central digital content adheres to appropriate University policy, legal requirements, and accessibility guidelines 
  • Be aware of and up to date with best practice and strategic use of digital and social media communications
  • Research relevant digital developments and trends across wider digital landscape
  • Share knowledge and learnings with the wider Communications team and the University as a whole 
  • Any other duties that arise from time to time as directed by the line manager or nominee.

Person Requirements 

The role-holder will require the following knowledge, skills and attributes for successful performance in the role. 

Qualifications 

A qualification in communications, digital content production and management or other relevant disciplines, while not essential, is desirable. 

Knowledge

Knowledge of the higher education sector is desired, though a willingness and ability to learn quickly on the job is essential.

Experience 
  • Minimum of 3-4 years’ experience working in social media and digital communications
  • Proven experience in creating and developing creative and compelling digital content (e.g. video, photography, graphics, interactive media, etc.) which aligns with organisational goals and strategies
  • Technical and practical experience creating and producing high-quality video content for use across digital platforms 
  • Experience working across full range of social and digital platforms in all aspects of messaging and engagement, including Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, X, Tik Tok and YouTube
  • Proficient working with relevant digital content production software and applications such as:
    • Video editing - Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, InShot, CapCut, LumaFusion, VN Video Editor
    •  Graphic Design - Canva, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe creative suite.
  • Proven experience in social media and digital data analytics including measuring and reporting on activity and the  implementation of results 
  • Familiar with current digital filming and photography equipment 
  • Experience in building collaborative working relationships with stakeholders at multiple levels 
  • Experience in photography with a particular eye for capturing creative and striking images
  • Experience working with full MS Office suite including Teams, Sharepoint, Outlook, Excel, OneDrive etc
  • Experience in managing multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced challenging work environment
