Part of the ongoing PRII Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Initiative, our next information session for the public relations and communications sector takes place on Tuesday 19 July from 4:00 to 5:00pm on Zoom.

This, the fifth seminar in the series, will focus on Irish Travellers, a minority ethnic group who continue to experience discrimination and marginalisation and are subject to stereotyping and racism in public discourse. This session explores what communications professionals need to know when Irish Travellers are among their stakeholder groups, including employees, and what are exclusionary and offensive language and images.

We will learn about the award-winning advocacy and communication work being undertaken by, and for, Irish Travellers by Pavee Point and what all communicators need to bear in mind when trying to reach the travelling community. We will also hear what Edelman Ireland learned from working with the Travelling community on Covid-related information programmes.

Pavee Point is a national non-governmental organisation comprised of Travellers, Roma and members of the majority population working in partnership at national, regional, local and international levels. According to Census 2016 there were 31,000 Irish Travellers in Ireland or 0.7% of the population.

Over the past thirty years Pavee Point has an established track record in innovative and ground-breaking work using a collective community development approach to addressing Traveller & Roma issues and rights.

Previous webinars in this series have looked at why the sector needs to be proactive in increasing its diversity: why that’s good for creativity and campaign outcomes, and necessary for sustainable recruitment and growth. We have also looked at how some sections of the population continue to be under-represented in PR and the media. Overall, as part of this PRII DEI Initiative, we’ve been making the case that public relations and communications teams should reflect the diverse society we live and work in and be part of the solution to social issues.

The presenters on 19 July will be:

  • Martin Collins, Co-Director of Pavee Point Travellers & Roma Centre. Martin is a Travellers’ rights activist for over 30 years. He was a strong advocate for State recognition of Traveller ethnicity which was achieved in 2017.  Martin was a Human Rights Commissioner between 2002-07 and is a member of the Advisory Committee for the Council of Europe Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities. In 2020, Pavee Point was awarded the Max van der Stoel Award co-sponsored by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) High Commissioner on National Minorities and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is presented to a person, group or institution, in recognition of extraordinary and outstanding achievements in improving the position of national minorities across the 57 OSCE countries. Pavee Point are the first Irish organisation to receive this global recognition.
  • Caoimhe McCabe, Information Officer, Pavee Point who works across the wide range of advocacy, education, events, issues and publications undertaken by Pavee Point.
  • Leila Shaddadi, Associate Vice President, Edelman Global Advisory Ireland and Chair of the Edelman EMEA DE&I Council.
