The Health Service Executive (HSE) is a statutory body under the aegis of the Department of Health charged with the provision of a wide range of health and social services. The HSE is amongst the most important public bodies in the State, with an essential role in meeting the health needs of the population and delivering on the Government’s ambition of improving population health and the health services.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, and a member of the Executive Management Team, the National Director of Communications will be responsible for the strategic leadership of a large team of communications professionals working across a range of areas including digital and social media, marketing campaigns, press and media and internal communications.

The National Director of Communications is a key role for the HSE. The purpose of the post is to lead in building the trust and confidence of the Irish public in the health service and inspiring staff and partners behind this vision.

The National Director will oversee an ambitious strategy to support and enable strategic communications capacity within the health services, which includes integrated communications planning, delivery and evaluation to maximise the impact of communications activities.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Substantial experience across the major communications disciplines and of leading and managing a team of communications professionals;
  • Experience of working at a senior level in a complex environment, overseeing the delivery of communications programmes in line with corporate priorities;
  • Proven experience of leading, influencing and delivering change within an organization;
  • Proven incident and crisis communications experience, with the ability to operate effectively in pressurised and rapidly changing situations;
  • The ability to think strategically and recognise broad implications of public relations and media-related issues as they relate to the HSE, the Government and broader Stakeholders.  

A third-level or relevant post-graduate qualification in a Communications/Marketing or a related relevant discipline as well as an understanding of and experience of interaction with the political system are highly desirable.
