Media Relations Officer - Part Time - Trinity College Dublin

Are you a good communicator with a keen understanding of the media? Do you have an ability to communicate on a diversity of topics? Trinity College Dublin is seeking to appoint a part-time Media Relations Officer who will assist in the promotion of research and educational initiatives related to arts and humanities, but also a broader range of topics, including innovation, entrepreneurship and general news across the University. It will involve developing suitable content for media, social media as well as digital content for the Trinity website. The appointee will work closely with the Director of Public Affairs and Communications in a fast-paced working environment to help develop content for a range of media platforms. They will also support the ongoing needs of the area, including the maintenance of the media archive, media lists, sourcing experts for comment among other administrative duties and projects. The position will be based in the Office of Public Affairs and Communications.

Background to the post

The promotion of quality research, innovation and educational initiatives in the national and international media is important in maintaining Trinity College Dublin’s profile as a university of global consequence. This role, based in the Media Relations unit of the Office of Public Affairs and Communications Office, forms part of an expanded media relations team engaged in this promotion for the benefit of the University. The Media Relations Officer will assist and report to the Director of Public Affairs and Communications in carrying out duties.

Main Content

Standard duties and responsibilities of the post

  • Assist the Director and media relations team in promoting Trinity’s educational initiatives, innovation and research to the media;
  • Assist with proactive media work, including drafting advance notices, media releases and pitches;
  • Identify and provide College experts for the media on a wide range of topics;
  • Develop engaging social media content;
  • Contribute to the College News section on the Trinity website, providing news items related to the activities of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the arts and humanities research institute, the Trinity Long Room Hub, as well as broader university activities;
  • Maintain and update media lists, media archive, daily news alert of media clippings, media monitoring reports among other administrative duties;
  • Assist with general administration of the office.



  • A relevant third level degree (Essential).

Knowledge & Experience (Essential & Desirable)

  • A minimum of two years’ experience with a strong track record in communications or journalism (Essential).
  • Knowledge of social media, video and digital communications (Desirable).
  • Understanding and appreciation of academic research related to the arts and humanities (Desirable).

Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent writing skills with an ability to explain academic research, or similar complex topics, communicating their relevance to a wider, more general audience (Essential).
  • Interpersonal skills – ability to interact and build networks with stakeholders across relevant schools, administrative areas and wider University; ability to interact with people at all levels both internal and external to the organisation; ability to communicate with appropriate diplomacy and confidentiality; a team worker, operating effectively as part of a team and contributing to the overall development of the Public Affairs and Communications’ media relations function.
  • Motivated – resourceful and capable of working on own initiative; analytical skills and an ability to problem solve; ability to prioritise tasks under time constraints.
  • Flexible approach – ability to operate flexibly and strategically within a busy environment, dealing with competing demands in order to produce high quality response; deadline orientated and attention to detail, possessing a high standard of delivery as is appropriate for the College.


Appointment will be made on the Administrative Officer 2 (Schedule B) salary scale pro rata 0.5FTE at a point in line with Government Pay Policy [€48,996 - €57,571]
