Newstalk and Today FM have gained listeners while RTE Radio 1 was the biggest loser across weekdays and weekends in the latest Joint National Listenership Research figures (JNLRs). RTE 2FM also lost out.
Newstalk at 6.6% returned its highest national market share ever in these latest figures, while its Communicorp stable mate TodayFM now commands a market share of 7.3%.
Local radio in Ireland still holds strong with 58% of daily listeners tuning into regional radio stations as opposed to 44% to a national station.
In Cork 33.1% of adult listeners tune into 96FM, while 24.2% listen to Red FM.
Sunshine 106.8 has grown to 7.7% of market share in Dublin.
Sligo based Ocean FM is now the fourth most listened-to local radio station in Ireland. 47% of people living in Sligo, North Leitrim and South Donegal listen to Ocean FM every day as opposed to 29% who listen to RTE Radio 1, 16% to Today FM and 10% to Newstalk in that region.
Newstalk Breakfast with Paul Williams, Shane Coleman and Alan Quinlan has grown to 126,000 listeners which is a growth of 10,000 year on year. However over on RTÉ 1, Morning Ireland is still the most listened to radio show in the country with 431,000 listeners.
Pat Kenny has increased his listenership on Newstalk to 148,000 while Today with Sean O’Rourke lost 17,000 listeners and Ryan Tubridy has dropped from 318,000 to 305,000 listeners per day.
The News at One on RTÉ1 has an audience of 332,000 while Dr Ciara Kelly over on Newstalk’s Lunchtime Live has 99,000 listeners, much the same as previous host George Hook. Muireann O’Connell has 101,000 listeners during the lunchtime slot on TodayFM.
Ivan Yates' drivetime show the Hard Shoulder, gained 6,000 listeners and now has an audience of 145,000 while Drivetime with Mary Wilson over on RTÉ 1 has 226,000.
