New GDPR Resource for Members

20 March 2018

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into effect on the 25 May 2018, replacing the existing data protection framework under the EU Data Protection Directive.

The aim of GDPR is to allow EU citizens to better control their personal data. It also modernises and unifies rules allowing businesses to reduce red tape and to benefit from greater consumer trust.

Its purpose is to promote transparency, security and accountability by data controllers and to standardise and strengthen citizens’ rights to data privacy. Therefore, organisations involved in data processing of any sort need to be aware of the obligations these new regulations impose on them.

As part of our ongoing support of members in relation to this PRII has developed a GDPR Resource in the Members Only Area containing some general information on the GDPR as well as the notes from our recent GDPR - What it may mean for Day-to-Day PR Practice with Louise O’Brien, Associate Director, KPMG and President, Irish Chapter of  DAMA, the Data Management Association. Which outlined the new regulation and discussed how it may impact on Member’s day-to-day work. It also includes links to relevant guides from the Data Protection Commissioner and other reading relating to PR and Media Relations.

Members can access this resource in the Members Only area here. [You will need to be logged into the PRII site already for the link to bring you directly, or if you are navigating from the login page  you will be brought to Members News from where you click on the Resources tab (second from the left) and GDPR should be listed second from the top on that page.
