The inaugural meeting of Media Literacy Ireland took place on Friday, 23 February in the offices of Facebook. Under the auspices of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI), Media Literacy Ireland is an association of member organisations committed to the promotion of media literacy, for all ages, across all media, in to the future.
In an ever-changing media environment, media literacy fosters the knowledge and confidence of media consumers to seek out accurate information, counter unfair representation, recognise bias and challenge inaccurate or extremist views.
The objective of the meeting was to begin an in-depth planning process to deliver a wide range of public information and engagement projects.
Attendees on the day included the Dept of Communications, Climate Action and the Environment, the Dept of Health, the Dept of Education, media researchers, academics and policy makers, traditional media organisations, social media platforms, NGOs, regulatory bodies such as the ASAI, and public relations professionals. The conference MC was Catherine Heaney MPRII, MD, DHR Communications.
The PRII and PRCA were represented by CEO, Martina Byrne, who was one of the guest speakers. Martina highlighted the skills and expertise that public relations professionals bring to their work in developing public information and social movement campaigns such as those being planned by Media Literacy Ireland. During her presentation she pointed out that media literacy is, by definition, a topic that would require ongoing, sustained attention by all sectors of society.
