False News and the European Election

The European Parliament Office in Ireland invites PRII Members to a seminar on "False news and the European Election"
The seminar will take place at The Irish Architectural Archive, 45 Merrion Square East, Dublin 2 on Friday, 15 June from 10.00am to 1.00pm (registration from 9.30am).

False News, or Fake News, has become a key issue in modern politics all over the world. Politicians, media practitioners, public institutions, academics and researchers alike are trying to keep up with developments in this fast-moving area. Our understanding of its impact on elections and referenda is incomplete, but what we do know is highly unsettling.

The aim of this seminar will be to examine the extent to which the phenomena we describe as 'False News' has impacted on Ireland and then to look ahead to its relevance in the Presidential, European, Local - and possible General - Elections in the next twelve months, asking if there are grounds for concern and, if so, what is the appropriate response at both national and EU level.
