Gerry Mooney named 2017 Press Photographer of the Year


The Press Photographers Association of Ireland Press Photographer of the Year Awards 2017 were announced last Friday, January 27th.

Gerry Mooney from Independent News &Media was named Press Photographer of the Year 2017.

The awards, now in their 39th year were presented by Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs,Heather Humphreys TD. Two new categories were presented this year with  Bryan O’Brien of The Irish Times winning  the Multimedia category for best use of video while the Best Black & White image category award went to Steve Humphreys of Independent News & Media.

There were nine other categories in all covering; news, daily life & people, nature & the environment, politics, sports action, sports feature, portrait, art & entertainment and reportage, as well as the overall Press Photographer of the Year.

Speaking at the awards, Minister Humphreys said; “Every day, press photographers capture the essence of the stories behind the headlines. From tragedy to triumph, press photographers bring the events of the day to life and document the highs and lows of our national story.”

The award-winning and highly commended images will be on display at venues around the country as part of the ‘Press Photographer of the Year 2017‘ Exhibition.
