The fundamental role of the external examiner is to assure academic standards and the quality of teaching, learning, and assessment. Their role is to provide independent quality assurance for the assessment process. The external examiner confirms the academic standards of courses, modules, and the awards to which they lead are consistent with the academic outcomes specified by the PRII and are comparable to those achieved in the subject area in equivalent institutions domestically/internationally. The ideal candidate will have prior experience as an external examiner and demonstrate deep insights to academic integrity in a HE institution.
External Examiner – Diploma in Communications and PR
The Public Relations Institute of Ireland (PRII) is seeking candidates from suitably qualified and experienced professionals to serve as External Examiner for the Professional Diploma in Communications and PR.
External Examiners are essential in ensuring the quality, rigour, fairness, and integrity of our exams. Acting as impartial independent experts, external examiners help to strengthen teaching, learning, and exam, while supporting the maintenance of high academic standards on the diploma.
Duration of Post: 3 years, starting September 2026

About The Role

Their role is to provide independent quality assurance for the assessment process. The extern examiner confirms that the academic standards of courses, modules, and the awards to which they lead are consistent with the academic outcomes specified by the PRII and are comparable to those achieved in the subject area in equivalent institutions domestically/internationally.
Key Responsibilities
The External Examiner will:
- Review Constructive alignment between the exams and the diploma learning outcomes.
- Audit a sample of graded exams and review grade distributions.
- Provide recommendations to enhance exam quality and consistency.
- Attend Board of Examiner meetings.
- Submit formal reports to the PRII head of training.
Qualifications and Expertise Sought
We welcome candidates who:
- Have prior experience as an external examiner with a higher education institution.
- Demonstrate deep expertise and deep insight into academic integrity, quality assurance and programme enhancement.
- Demonstrate insight into current trends and best practice regarding academic integrity including HE policy/procedue and NAIN.
- Hold relevant academic, professional qualifications.
- Demonstrate expertise in Communications, Public Relations or similar.
- Have experience in teaching, assessment, and/or programme quality assurance.
- Can provide independent, impartial judgement.
- Have no conflicts of interest with PRII.
