Internal Comms - A Key Enabler of Company Strategy - Cork Event Review

Employees are an organisation's greatest champions; Internal communication is a key enabler of company strategy; measurement & evaluation are fundamental to internal comms initiative; traditional forms of communication (such as posters) are still as important today as digital modes; and internal comms play a vital role in employee retention. These were just some of the key points attendees took away from the Best Practice Internal Comms event held in the Lady’s Well Brewery in Cork last week.

Sandy Boundy, Corporate Affairs, Communications & CSR Manager at Heineken Ireland gave a very insightful presentation on the #PRAwards17 winning Heineken Connects programme and detailed how the company continues to innovate in its internal communications activities.

After this presentation Sandy joined Sinead Whooley FPRII, who leads the Communications & Engagement team in the National Shared Services Office, within the Department of Public Expenditure & Reform and Eoin Weldon MPRII, from AM O’Sullivan PR in a very open discussion on the potential and the power of Internal Comms, which also touched on a lot of practical tips not least a discussion over how to make the best use technology and a debate on Yammer v Workplace.

The evening was then wrapped up by PRII CEO Dr Martina Byrne building on the enthusiasum of the panel and audience discussion and reflecting on the valuable insights and practical tips gained from all the contributors on the evening. She noted in particular that is an area PRII is keen to build capacity in and enable member share ideas and experience.

As Ann-Marie O'Sullivan FPRII, Chief Executive of AM O'Sullivan PR commented, “the PRII Internal Comms. event in Cork provided great food for thought for all those attending and it was particularly interesting to get member’s views on the opportunity for communicators to ‘own’ internal comms.  Its important for all members that PRII events are organised around the country.  Thanks to Martina and Frank for travelling to Cork, to the excellent speakers on the night and special thanks to Heineken for the ‘loan of the hall’!”

We were very pleased so many members made it along and we were particularly happy to welcome students from the CIT MA in Public Relations with New Media.

A big thank you to Sandy and the team at Heineken for their generous hospitality in The Kiln Bar on the evening. Judging by the success of the evening we look forward to organising similar events over the months to come.
