This year’s Journalism Awards, sponsored by the National Lottery attracted 1,400 individual entriesm which organisers said was the biggest level of entries ever.
A total of 25 category awards were presented at the ceremony held on November 2nd. These covered the areas of News, Sport, Business, Crime, Foreign Coverage, Investigative Journalism, Digital Excellence, Showbiz, Political Coverage, Young, and Regional Journalist of the Year.
Catherine Fegan of the Irish Daily Mail and The Irish Mail on Sunday has been crowned the News Brands Ireland Journalist of the Year for 2017. Catherine won the award in recognition of her reporting on stories including road safety in Donegal and budget cuts in the HSE. This is the first time the Irish Daily Mail has won the top prize AT the annual Journalism Awards.
Renowned Galway historian Catherine Corless received a Special Contribution to Investigative Research award, whose tireless work brought the plight of the Tuam Babies to the attention of the world.
